Canoe-Kayak Programs

2017 Registration for our canoe-kayak programs will open on March 1, 2017. If you would like to be notified when registration opens or if you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact us year-round at petriecanoe@gmail.com

1. Regatta-Ready (2 week) Introduction to Canoe-Kayak

Regatta Ready is a two-week introduction to competitive Sprint Canoe-Kayak, and provides all the basics needed to continue into the full summer Competitive Sprint Program.

CAMP DATES: July 4-14, July 17-28, July 31-August 11 (excl. Aug 1), August 14-25

PRICE: 9-day camp $455, 10-day camp $495

WHAT TO EXPECT: On our first day, ALL Regatta-Ready paddlers will take a basic Swim to Survive swim test (see “prerequisites” section below). The second dip of the day will be “Tip, Turn, and Tow”, where you will practice tipping safely, and retrieving your boat. Most participants spend the first couple of days getting their balance in kayaks. Don’t sweat getting wet- even Olympians tip sometimes!

Once we’re able, the group will head out on its first adventure together. Each day on the water, you’ll improve your strength, skills, balance, steering, and endurance. By the time you have been paddling for two weeks, you will be ready for your first regatta!

Returning Regatta Ready Participants: Regatta Ready is the introduction into competitive Sprint Canoe and Kayak. If you have taken the Regatta Ready program before we highly encourage you to sign up for our full summer Sprint program.

If you decide to take this 2 week introduction to competitive canoeing again, we would like to remind you that you will be going through the same program again in terms of a few days of introduction to the sport, and will be placed in speed and age appropriate groups to train for the two weeks.

Regattas: Each Regatta Ready camp wraps up with a half-day mini-regatta at Rideau Canoe Club (Mooney’s Bay). Races are fun, low-key, and designed with beginners in mind! Parents are welcome to attend.

2. Competitive Sprint Program (8 weeks)

Our Competitive Sprint Program is designed to accommodate the developing Canoe/Kayak athlete, respecting His/her individual needs and developmental level.

DATES: July 4- August 25

PRICE: $975

Athletes practice paddling skills in a variety of boats, including single canoes/kayaks, team boats (2 and 4 person canoes/kayaks), and war canoe (C-15).

Dryland training includes regular running, active games, and body weight circuits. Friends of Petrie Island provides paddlers with two hours/week of ecological education and hands-on stewardship activities.

The program’s intent is to introduce the growing athlete to a number of activities and skills that will help to facilitate athlete development to an optimal level. Beginners are welcome!

This is the perfect program for you if you love being outdoors, and want to

  • develop your overall fitness
  • gain skills and coordination
  • learn how to be a leader and a great teammate
  • learn how to set goals and work towards them
  • have fun and make life-long friends!

By the time you have been paddling for two weeks, you will be ready for your first regatta! By the end of the summer, you can expect to have significantly improved your general fitness, and have gained some serious boat skills, which translates into confidence on the water!

Regattas: Every second Friday, Petrie paddlers will attend a half-day mini-regatta at Rideau Canoe Club (Mooney’s Bay). Races are fun, low-key, and designed with beginners in mind! Parents are welcome to attend.

Petrie Island’s Sprint athletes will have the additional opportunity to attend four nearby Eastern Ontario Division regattas. All Eastern Ontario Regattas are highlighted in green, on the schedule below:

Athletes will receive regatta information a week or two prior to the event. It is very important that paddlers notify their coach if they are unable to attend any regatta as team boats require a team commitment.

Pre-requisites:
Although no paddling experience is required, all paddlers must demonstrate minimum swim ability.

Prior to getting in boats all participants must show they have the ability to roll into the water and swim 50 meters (any stroke) and stay afloat (tread water) for 1 minute (as per the National Lifesaving Society Swim to Survive standard). Instructors will assess swimming ability on the 1st day of the program so please come ready to get in the water. Swim ability is assessed without a lifejacket or other flotation device.

If your child is nervous about passing the swim test, we encourage you to take him/her to your local pool to practice beforehand.
