Description

Sprint canoe and kayak is an exciting water sport that combines speed, fitness and technique. Athletes paddle single and team boats, build strong paddling skills and may compete at regional regattas. New and experienced paddlers train together in a supportive environment while developing friendships, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, self-confidence and independence.

Training continues throughout the year:

Winter: Athletes prepare for the paddling season through strength and aerobic training, indoor swimming, squash and skate-skiing. Skate-skiing is a form of cross-country skiing that uses a side-to-side skating motion.

Spring: Athletes continue strength and aerobic training, indoor swimming and squash. On-water paddling begins when the weather and river conditions are suitable.

Summer: Athletes paddle every day in a variety of single and team sprint canoes and kayaks. They may also compete at regional regattas. Every Friday morning, parents are invited to cheer during a club-wide mini-triathlon featuring running, swimming and paddling. Athletes receive a progress report at the end of each 4-week session.

Fall: Athletes continue paddling until the weather and river conditions are no longer suitable, supported by strength and aerobic training throughout the season.

About program fees

Our fees may look higher, but they include all regional regatta costs for the season, with no separate club fee. Other clubs may add membership, sport affiliation, regatta, and trailer fees throughout the summer. We include these upfront so families are not surprised by extra charges.

Provincial and national race fees are separate and only apply if an athlete qualifies.

What to bring

Summer

Please arrive wearing sunscreen, and dressed to get wet! Good paddling clothes are close-fitting and dry quickly. Shirts should cover the shoulders. On cool days, a thermal long-sleeved shirt and shell are recommended.  Bring a healthy lunch and snacks, a water bottle, sandals, sneakers, a hat, sunscreen, a towel, and two warm changes of clothes.

Winter

PICC will provide weights equipment. Athletes will need to purchase skate skis before January; please ask your coach to check them out before you buy! We recommend buying second-hand from a ski swap/facebook marketplace, or kijiji.
